Monge – ELA: Weekly Update Part 1 – 4/6

Teacher: Monge (

Hello all you fourth graders!  Welcome to the first of two (sometimes three) weekly updates.  I hope that everyone had a great weekend.  It was a pretty busy one around here.  Since the weather was nice, I decided to get some yard work done.  I spent a lot of time cleaning up around the back yard getting everything ready for the warmer weather.  I was also able to take a few walks with my family, play some board games (Connect 4 and Guess Who are the favorites right now), and read.  How about you, what did you have time for?  Remember, you can record your daily activities in your journal which you can access by going to (remember to choose Monge Grade 4 ELA) and clicking on the assignments tab.  Please note, you will need to be logged in with your hps username (e-mail).  If you need this, please message me and I will send it to you.

I am excited to announce that we will be starting to do the Readworks article of the day.  Each morning a new Readworks article will be available for you to read and answer questions about.  You can access these here and entering the class code, 3K4LGX.

In addition to the Readworks article of the day, I have posted two follow up articles on newsela to the Zuriel Oduwole article you read.  These articles continue to discuss the amazing things young people are doing around the world Those can be accessed here  (class code: A4QR4G) and will be discussed in our class zoom on Friday 4/10.  If you would like to learn more about Zuriel Oduwole, here is the link to her Ted Talk on the impact youth can have in making a global difference

I would also like to remind you about, where you can read a variety of different books.  Our class code is rnr5828.

Below is a sample schedule of what work can look like for each day.

30 minutes – reading and answering the questions from the Readworks article of the day or the posted Newsela article

30 minutes – writing in your 4 square journal or in a journal of your choosing.  You could also use this time to research and write about something that interests you.  Perhaps you want to learn about the 50 states, great choose a state, read/watch a video and then draw and label a picture of the state.

30 minutes – Independent reading (this is a great time to use

30 Minutes – Art (Check out what Ms. D has posted on both Hps at home and Dojo)
