Hola a todos,

Reading and Comprehension

Listen to the story Las jirafas no pueden bailar read aloud by me.  After listening to the story, use the following prompts to engage in a discussion with your child.  Encourage children to answer in full sentences. The questions can be divided to ask a few each day.  The more students listen to the story the more connections they will make and the more comprehension will happen.  Listen daily if you can and on Friday do a fun activity with the children.

 

  • What kind of animal was Gerardo? 
  • Where does the story take place? Who are the characters in the story?
  • What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story?  Use the transition words primero, segundo, tercero or primero, después, al final. 
  • What different dances did the animals dance?  What is your favorite dance? Why?
  • How did Gerard feel at the beginning of the story at the Baile Bestial? Why?  What clues does the author give you to let you know how Gerardo felt? Have you ever felt like Gerardo?
  • Why do you think the other animals were treating Gerardo the way they were treating him at the beginning?
  • What did the grillito teach Gerardo?  What did she teach him about being different from others?
  • All people have similarities and differences.  How can being different from others be a good thing?
  • What was your favorite part of the story and why?

Spanish Questions

  • ¿Qué tipo de animal era Gerardo? 
  • ¿Dónde sucede la historia? ¿Quienes son los personajes en esta historia?
  • ¿Qué pasó al principio, a la mitad y al final de la historia? Use las palabras de transición primero, segundo, tercero o primero, después, al final.
  • ¿Qué bailes diferentes bailaron los animales? ¿Cuál es tu baile favorito? ¿Por qué?
  • ¿Cómo se sintió Gerard al comienzo de la historia en el Baile Bestial? ¿Por qué? ¿Qué pistas te da el autor para hacerte saber cómo se sintió Gerardo? ¿Te has sentido como Gerardo?
  • ¿Por qué crees que los otros animales estaban tratando a Gerardo de la manera en que lo estaban tratando al principio?
  • ¿Qué le enseñó el grillito a Gerardo? ¿Qué le enseñó ella acerca de ser diferente de los demás?
  • Todas las personas tienen similitudes y diferencias. ¿Cómo puede ser bueno ser diferente de los demás?
  • ¿Cuál fue tu parte favorita de la historia y por qué?

 

Writing – Always happens after read aloud and discussion.

Day 1 – Fold a paper into three parts and write the number 1 on the first part, number 2 on the middle part and number 3 on the last part.  Point to each part and retell the story with your child. Try to focus on the important aspects of the story.

 

  • Gerardo is sad because he can’t dance.  Gerardo esta triste porque no puede bailar.
  • The cricket helps Gerardo to dance.  El grillo ayuda a Gerardo a bailar.
  • Gerardo shows his friends that being different is ok and dances for all.  Gerardo le ensena a sus amigos que ser diferente esta bien y baila para todos.

 

After discussion… have the children draw what happened first, next and last on each part.  

 If you can label, remember to always label your drawings.  Children retell the story using their drawings.

Challenge…

Try to write a simple  sentence to describe what is happening first, next and last.  Parents please write the transition words Primero, Despues, Al final.  Or Primero, Segundo and Tercero.

Example… 1. Primero la jirafa está triste.  2. Segundo la jirafa baila. 3. Al final la jirafa está contenta.  

These are just examples.  Any inventive spelling will do. All I want is for the students who are able to begin sounding out the words using the letters they know how to write.  

 

Day 2 – Draw a picture of your favorite part of the story.  Label your picture.  Finish the sentence stem…

Mi parte favorita de la historia es _____.

 

Day 3 –  The animals make fun of Gerardo because he is clumsy and can’t dance.  How does this make Gerard feel?

Draw a picture of how Gerardo felt?  Label your picture and finish the sentence stem…

Gerardo se sintió ____.

 

Day 4 –  Gerardo worried that he could not dance.  When do you worry like Gerardo?  Draw a picture and complete the sentence stem…  Soy como Gerardo la jirafa cuando me preocupo por ______.
